Aryna Sabalenka: Grateful for Support Amid Personal and Professional Challenges as She Heads to US Open Final
Belarusian tennis star Aryna Sabalenka, ranked No. 2 in the world, is set to compete in the US Open final on Saturday, September 7. Sabalenka will face Jessica Pegula, ranked No. 6, in what promises to be a highly anticipated showdown. While Pegula is making her first appearance in a Grand Slam final, Sabalenka, the reigning Australian Open champion for two consecutive years, will be vying for her third major title.
At Arthur Ashe Stadium, cheering Sabalenka on will be her boyfriend, Georgios Frangulis, who has been a constant source of support for the tennis player. Frangulis, a Brazilian motorsports enthusiast and CEO of the superfood company Oak Berry, publicly shared his love for Sabalenka on Instagram in July. Sabalenka responded to his post with a heartfelt comment: “My love of my life 🐒 ❤️ 💜 ❤️,” to which Frangulis replied, “@arynasabalenka my love 💜.”
While their relationship has drawn attention, it also marks a turning point in Sabalenka’s personal life after a difficult year. Earlier in March, her ex-boyfriend, former hockey player Konstantin Koltsov, tragically died in what was reported as an apparent suicide by the Miami-Dade Police Department. Koltsov, 42, had been supporting Sabalenka at the Miami Open at the time of his death. Although they had ended their relationship before his passing, Sabalenka described feeling “heartbroken” by the news, as shared in a candid interview with *The Independent* in August. Reflecting on the emotionally challenging period, she admitted, “Looking back, I definitely think that I should have just stopped and separated myself from tennis, taken a break, recharged, and started things over again.”
Despite the heartbreak, Sabalenka has found strength and joy in her relationship with Frangulis. Before her semifinal victory against Emma Navarro at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York, Sabalenka opened up about how important Frangulis has been throughout the year. In an interview with *People*, she said, “There was a really tough period where I was really happy to have him by my side, always cheering me up, always making sure we were doing some fun stuff. He was my biggest support, and I’m really happy to have him by my side.”
Sabalenka’s relationship with Frangulis has also extended into her professional life. In January, she became the brand ambassador for Oak Berry, the superfood company co-founded by Frangulis. “Aryna Sabalenka is a great example of the future of tennis, and we are working closely with her to create some really exciting things over the years,” Frangulis said in a company statement at the time. “We can’t wait for our fans to get involved!”
Sabalenka first made her relationship with Frangulis public on Instagram in May, sharing a photo of the two walking arm-in-arm in the rain. She captioned the post, “What my days off the court have been looking like recently 😉🫶.”
Sabalenka’s return to form on the tennis court has also been a highlight of her year. After struggling with her health and choosing not to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics, she made a strong comeback by winning the Cincinnati Open in August, where she defeated Pegula in the final, 6-3, 7-5. Following the win, Sabalenka humorously thanked her “boyfriends” in her victory speech, before quickly correcting herself, “That’s my terrible English, guys.” She then added, “Thank you to my boyfriend who keeps me happy every day. Thank you so much.”
Now, with the support of Frangulis by her side, Sabalenka heads into the US Open final determined to secure another Grand Slam victory and end what has been an emotionally challenging year on a triumphant note.
