Green Bay Packers’ recent hire of Jeff Hafley as defensive coordinator may have caught some by surprise, considering the initial interviews conducted by the team. However, in Hafley, Matt LaFleur has secured a coach with a proven ability to lead a productive defense and manage a team effectively.
This experience is particularly valuable for the Packers, given LaFleur’s dual role as the offensive coordinator. Having orchestrated one of the most dynamic young offenses in the league in 2023, LaFleur now has a defensive coordinator in Hafley whom he can rely on to essentially act as the head coach of Green Bay’s defense.
Hafley’s previous stint as the head coach at Boston College for four seasons adds an interesting dimension to his profile. While BC may not be considered a college football powerhouse, Hafley built a more than respectable program, leaving with a 22-26 overall record. Notably, the Eagles were bowl-eligible in 2020, 2021, and 2023 under his guidance.
However, it’s Hafley’s prowess as a defensive coach that likely appealed to LaFleur. In 2021, his Boston College defense ranked No. 3 in passing yards allowed across all of college football. Moreover, during his time as co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Ohio State in 2019, his defense claimed top spots nationally in yards allowed per play, total defense, and scoring defense. This remarkable season led to Hafley being a finalist for the prestigious Frank Broyles Award and earning the title of Defensive Coordinator of the Year by 247Sports.
Hafley’s success extends to his NFL experience, having served as the defensive backs coach for the San Francisco 49ers from 2016 to 2018 and holding the same position with the Cleveland Browns in 2014 and 2015. His coaching journey began in 2001 at Worcester Polytechnic, followed by roles at Albany, Pittsburgh, and Rutgers as a college assistant.
At 44 years old, hailing from Montvale, N.J., Hafley shares the same age as LaFleur, possibly adding another layer of synergy between the two. As the Packers gear up for the upcoming seasons, the combination of LaFleur’s offensive prowess and Hafley’s defensive acumen presents an intriguing formula for success.
