In a gesture of inclusivity, USGA chief Mike Whan has extended a warm welcome to LIV Golf players, affirming they will be embraced “with open arms” should they meet the qualifying criteria for the prestigious US Open. With approximately half of the tournament slots determined by qualifiers, Whan underscores the US Open’s distinction as the most accessible of the Majors.
Notably, nine LIV Golf competitors have secured exemptions for the upcoming 2024 US Open at Pinehurst, with an additional 35 vying for qualification through the Final Qualifying rounds. Whan takes pride in the tournament’s democratic ethos, emphasizing that unlike other championships, the US Open remains truly “open,” with a significant portion of its roster earned through rigorous qualification processes.
Acknowledging the caliber of talent across various tours including the DP World Tour, PGA Tour, Korn Ferry Tour, and Asian Tours, Whan underscores the level playing field provided by the US Open’s qualification structure. He notes that even established players not affiliated with these tours must prove themselves through 36 holes of rigorous qualifying play.
Among the exemptions holders for the 2024 US Open are illustrious names such as Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, and Martin Kaymer, alongside fan favorites like Phil Mickelson, Cameron Smith, Tyrrell Hatton, and Adrian Meronk.
Whan’s inclusive stance reflects the USGA’s commitment to fostering an environment where talent and merit take precedence, ensuring that deserving players, regardless of affiliation, have a chance to compete on golf’s grandest stage.
