Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz retained his Wimbledon title with a commanding straight-sets victory over seven-time champion Novak Djokovic on Sunday. In a rematch of last year’s final, Alcaraz defeated Djokovic 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(4), claiming his fourth Grand Slam title. This victory adds to his collection of two Wimbledon titles, one US Open title, and a French Open title.
By overcoming Djokovic, Alcaraz prevented the Serbian from securing his 25th Grand Slam title, which would have surpassed Margaret Court on the all-time list. Djokovic was also aiming to match Roger Federer’s record of eight men’s singles titles at Wimbledon. Alcaraz’s victory makes him the sixth man to win both the French Open and Wimbledon.
In this year’s Wimbledon, the tournament set a record with £50 million in total prize money. Both singles champions earned £2.7 million each. Alcaraz, who received £2.35 million for last year’s victory, took home $3,427,396 (approximately 283,500,000 Indian rupees) for his triumph this year. Djokovic, as the runner-up, earned £1,400,000 (approximately ₹147,000,000).
Alcaraz showcased his dominance by firing 42 winners compared to Djokovic’s 26 during the final. The 37-year-old Djokovic has yet to win a major title in 2024 and lost his World No.1 ranking to Jannik Sinner earlier this season. Reflecting on the match, Djokovic acknowledged his subpar performance but praised Alcaraz’s elite tennis, especially from the back of the court. “It obviously was not the result I wanted but of course in the first couple of sets the level of tennis wasn’t up to par from my side. But credit to Carlos for playing elite tennis, especially from the back of the court, he had it all today,” he said.
