World No. 1 Nelly Korda Left Out of Solheim Cup Afternoon Fourballs, Surprising Catriona Matthew
After three sessions of the Solheim Cup, the U.S. team is in prime position to reclaim the trophy for the first time since 2017. Despite their strong performance, the decision to leave out one of their top players, World No. 1 Nelly Korda, during Saturday afternoon’s fourball matches raised eyebrows, particularly for Solheim Cup legend Catriona Matthew.
The tournament is taking place at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, and Korda has been a standout performer for Team USA. So far, she has won her three matches convincingly, 3&2, 6&4, and 1-up, achieving a perfect 3-0-0 record. However, to the surprise of many, including Matthew, Korda was rested during Saturday afternoon’s session.
Following the conclusion of the morning foursomes, which ended in a 2-2 tie, Matthew expressed her confusion over the decision to rest Korda. “I’m surprised on the American side that they’re resting Nelly. I thought Nelly and Megan [Khang] would have gone out again. They were so good yesterday, and it’s not as if Nelly has played that many holes,” she told the media. “Yes, today she played a few more, but yesterday she didn’t play that many.”
Matthew, a two-time winning Solheim Cup captain, further speculated on Korda’s absence, suggesting that she may still play a significant role off the course. “I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s out there supporting Khang and Lee in their match. But to leave her out is surprising. When you win three games, you’re on a roll, and she’s clearly embraced the atmosphere, the crowd, and the competition this week.”
Korda’s impressive Solheim Cup record now stands at 10 wins, 4 losses, and 1 tie over 15 matches. A win in tomorrow’s singles matches could mark her first undefeated Solheim Cup, cementing her legacy even further.
As it stands, Team Europe faces an 8-4 deficit heading into the afternoon fourballs. A strong performance is crucial for Europe to remain in contention. Matthew, however, remains optimistic about her team’s chances. “I believe they can do it,” she said.
Matthew elaborated on the stakes, adding, “I really think they need to win this session. If they can close the gap to within two or three points going into the singles matches, anything can happen. Europe got off to a good start this morning. Suzann [Pettersen, Europe’s captain] will be encouraging them to get off to another strong start this afternoon. But then it’s about finishing matches. The Americans have been strong in the middle stretch, around holes 8 to 14, so if Europe can compete well in that range, we’ll have a chance.”
With everything on the line for Team Europe, they’ll need to dig deep in the remaining sessions if they hope to turn the tide in Virginia.
