Rory McIlroy’s recent US Open collapse has drawn worrying parallels with the early career struggles of golf legend Phil Mickelson. The Northern Irish golfer, who has not secured a major title in a decade, seemed poised for victory at the US Open last weekend. However, he stumbled, relinquishing the top spot to Bryson DeChambeau. This defeat marked one of the most challenging days of McIlroy’s career, prompting him to announce a temporary break from the sport.
At 35, McIlroy’s form has raised concerns, with some comparing his recent trajectory to Mickelson’s early years as a professional. Before Mickelson won his first major in April 2004, he had amassed 23 top-25 finishes, 17 top-10s, nine top-5s, and three runner-up spots. Known for his near misses, Mickelson eventually secured six major victories. McIlroy’s recent statistics echo Mickelson’s earlier struggles: since his last major win in 2014, McIlroy has recorded 26 top-25 finishes, 21 top-10s, 11 top-5s, and three runner-up positions, the latest being at Pinehurst.
However, McIlroy is unlikely to appreciate this comparison, especially given his longstanding feud with Mickelson. The discord between the two has intensified since the rise of LIV Golf in 2022, with McIlroy openly criticizing the hectic schedules on the PGA Tour and suggesting that an off-season could alleviate some of the pressure. In response, Mickelson, known for his sharp retorts, suggested on X that McIlroy might be better suited for LIV Golf, though he later added that no team would want to deal with McIlroy’s perceived issues.
The rivalry has seen both golfers exchange barbs. McIlroy previously mocked Mickelson for his absence from the 2023 Ryder Cup amid allegations that Mickelson had placed a £314,000 bet on the 2012 Ryder Cup—a claim Mickelson denies. McIlroy quipped that at least Mickelson could place bets on the event since he wouldn’t be participating.
Despite the current setbacks, McIlroy is anticipated to make his return to the golf course at the upcoming Scottish Open next month, following his brief hiatus.
