“You Won’t Believe What He Can Do With the Ball in His Hands – A Scoring Sensation!”

Posted on September 5, 2024

Shea Ili, the NBL’s top defensive player, is set to become a key offensive weapon for Melbourne United after impressing NBA superstar Luka Doncic with his scoring skills.

Ili was a standout in New Zealand’s Olympic qualifying campaign in July, dropping 28 points in a memorable performance during a loss to Doncic’s Slovenia.

The fiery 31-year-old guard also ramped up his scoring with the Sandringham Sabres in NBL1 South this year, adding another dimension to his game. This new versatility gives Melbourne United coach Dean Vickerman another offensive option as the team prepares for a fresh NBL title run when the season kicks off on September 19.

“He had a great campaign with the Tall Blacks and came out of it with a scoring edge,” Vickerman said ahead of the NBL Blitz pre-season tournament. “He’s added a few new moves to his arsenal, and everyone’s looking to find him in transition to make the most of his speed. Plus, his defensive intensity is still at a really high level.”

Last season, Ili averaged a career-high 10.7 points per game while earning the Damian Martin Trophy for the league’s best defensive player, helping Melbourne United to a runner-up finish. Vickerman believes Ili’s scoring output will continue to rise.

“There comes a time when guards start losing speed, but not him,” Vickerman noted. “He’s still the fastest player on our squad, and he’s in peak form right now. It’ll be exciting to see what he can do with the ball in his hands in key moments this year.”

Entering his 11th NBL season, Ili is finally free from the shoulder injury and concussion issues that have plagued him over the past two years.

“I’m feeling good. My shoulder’s healed, and I’ve taken some hits without any (concussion) symptoms, which is a relief,” Ili said. “My game is primarily on the defensive end, but this year, I’m focusing on pushing the pace offensively and bringing energy on that side of the floor.”

Despite his growing offensive role, Ili still thrives on shutting down the league’s most dangerous guards, such as Bryce Cotton (Perth Wildcats), Parker Jackson-Cartwright (NZ Breakers), Derrick Walton Jr (SEM Phoenix), and Jaylen Adams (Sydney Kings). Alongside Matthew Dellavedova and import Ian Clark, Ili is ready to lead United’s defense in their quest for the title.

“It’s always a great challenge to guard the best players and see where you stand,” Ili said. “I’m not sure if I can keep up with the quick point guards, but it’s a good test for me and Delly. Having IC out there as well gives us options, and we’re ready for the fight.”
