The Golden State Warriors are aware of the challenges they face in their quest to return to the top of the NBA. While they have taken significant steps this offseason, they were unsuccessful in securing All-Stars Paul George from the Clippers and Lauri Markkanen from the Jazz.
ESPN’s Zach Lowe believes the Warriors will struggle to compete for a title unless they add another star to complement Steph Curry. “It’s going to take a home run, a lightning strike,” Lowe commented on *NBA Today*. He compared the situation to when the San Antonio Spurs drafted Kawhi Leonard near the end of Tim Duncan’s career, noting that teams with long-standing success often face difficulty in finding new stars through late-round draft picks.
Last season, the Warriors finished 10th in the Western Conference and lost to the Sacramento Kings in the play-in tournament. This year won’t be easier, especially with Klay Thompson now in Dallas, Curry turning 37 by season’s end, and Draymond Green approaching 35.
The Warriors did add veterans Buddy Hield, Kyle Anderson, and De’Anthony Melton for bench depth, but none of these players match the star caliber Lowe feels is necessary. “They’re a good team,” he said, acknowledging the Warriors could win a playoff round, or even two, but not enough to be true contenders.
Still, Lowe emphasized that this doesn’t diminish Curry’s legacy or indicate mismanagement by the front office. While they missed on players like George and Markkanen, and may regret their previous draft pick of James Wiseman, the team still has trade assets and isn’t out of the running yet.
As the window to acquire another star closes, much will depend on the development of younger players like Brandin Podziemski, Moses Moody, Jonathan Kuminga, and Trayce Jackson-Davis. General manager Mike Dunleavy will continue searching for opportunities, knowing it won’t be easy.
Ultimately, even if the Warriors don’t land another marquee player, Lowe suggested that there is honor in Curry remaining with the team and continuing to compete at a high level until the end of his career. After all, the Warriors’ achievements over the past decade have been extraordinary, and all great runs eventually come to an end.
