Golf fans are up in arms over Rory McIlroy’s apparent delay in taking a putt during the opening day of the Valero Texas Open, sparking controversy and debate within the golfing community.
McIlroy’s actions came under scrutiny when it appeared he exceeded the allotted 10 seconds to approach his ball, which was left hanging on the edge of the hole during his putt attempt. According to USGA Rule 13.3, players are granted a “reasonable time” to reach the hole after any part of the ball hangs over its edge, with the limit set at 10 seconds. If the ball falls into the hole within this timeframe, the previous shot stands. However, if the ball remains on the lip for the entire duration without falling, it’s considered at rest. Should the ball drop after this period, a one-stroke penalty is incurred, and the previous shot is retaken.
Many spectators observed that McIlroy appeared to take longer than the stipulated time, with some estimating it to be as much as 12 seconds. This led to calls for him to be penalized, with comparisons drawn to past incidents involving other players.
Despite varying opinions on the exact duration, the consensus among fans was that McIlroy’s delay was significant, with accusations of “cheating” being leveled against the 34-year-old. The debate raged on as fans disputed the precise timing of the ball’s stay on the lip, ranging from nine to 15 seconds.
In light of the controversy, McIlroy expressed his determination to refocus on his game, revealing that he sought guidance from Butch Harmon, former coach to Tiger Woods. Having missed previous tournaments due to issues with his performance, McIlroy emphasized his commitment to returning to peak form.
Reflecting on his discussion with Harmon, McIlroy highlighted the impact of the coach’s advice, stating that it resonated with him deeply. He acknowledged the significance of seeking a second opinion, particularly from someone with whom he shares a longstanding relationship.
As McIlroy strives to regain his competitive edge, his encounter with Harmon serves as a turning point in his journey, providing valuable insights and renewed determination to excel on the golf course.
