Auston Matthews continued his impressive form, contributing two goals and an assist as the Toronto Maple Leafs secured a 4-1 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday night.
Matthews extended his goal-scoring streak to seven consecutive games, accumulating an impressive 12 goals during this stretch and boosting his total to 28 for the season, leading the NHL in goals.
William Nylander showcased his prowess with a short-handed goal and two assists, extending his point streak to an impressive 11 games. This performance helped Toronto halt a two-game slide. John Tavares also found the back of the net, while Mitchell Marner contributed with two assists.
Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe expressed satisfaction with the team’s response, stating, “We wanted to go into the (holiday) break feeling good, especially how things went the other night.” He referred to the team’s 9-3 loss in Buffalo on Thursday.
The Blue Jackets faced a setback as center Sean Kuraly left the game with an abdominal injury with only 18.3 seconds left in the first period. The remaining time of the period was played just before the start of the second. While the injury did not seem serious, Kuraly was taken to the hospital for further evaluation.
Justin Danforth scored for Columbus, but the team suffered its fourth consecutive home loss. Daniil Tarasov made 26 saves in goal for the Blue Jackets.
Matthews showcased his scoring prowess early in the game, putting Toronto in front with a one-timer 8:20 into the first period. He achieved a notable milestone by becoming the first player with 27 or more goals through the first 30 games of a season since Jaromir Jagr in the 1996-1997 season.
Reflecting on his performance, Matthews humbly stated, “I’m just trying to attack, shoot the puck and utilize my shot, trying to get in open space and just staying focused out there. (I’m) taking one shift at a time and not getting too carried away with results.”
The teams exchanged goals in the second period, with Danforth tying the game early and Tavares reclaiming the lead during 4-on-4 play. Matthews expanded Toronto’s lead with a power-play goal, and Nylander sealed the victory with his 16th goal of the season in the third period.
Maple Leafs goaltender Martin Jones made 27 saves, contributing to the team’s solid performance.
