Masters champion Scottie Scheffler made his grand entrance at Valhalla on Monday for the PGA Championship, greeted by waves of congratulations from fellow players and fans alike. However, the well-wishes weren’t centered around his recent victories on the green. Instead, they revolved around a more personal triumph: Scheffler had become a father to a newborn baby boy.
Sharing the joyous news, Scheffler revealed that he and his wife had named their bundle of joy Bennett, who made his arrival into the world on May 8th. As Scheffler stepped onto the putting green, he was met with warm embraces and inquiries about his sleep schedule, a common topic among parents. Jon Rahm, himself a father of two sons, was one of the first to greet Scheffler, offering a hug and a knowing question about the challenges of parenting.
Despite his newfound role as a father, Scheffler’s focus remained on the upcoming tournament. Having not played since his impressive victory at the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town, where he secured his second Masters green jacket, Scheffler was eager to continue his winning streak. With four wins in his last five tournaments, including a runner-up finish at the Houston Open, Scheffler entered the PGA Championship as the betting favorite.
However, he faced stiff competition from the likes of Rory McIlroy and defending champion Brooks Koepka. McIlroy, a past winner of the PGA Championship at Valhalla in 2014, was riding high on the momentum of two consecutive victories. Koepka, on the other hand, was coming off his first win of the year at the LIV Golf Singapore event.
Scheffler’s sights were set on making history by becoming the first player since Jordan Spieth in 2015, and only the fifth player since 1960, to win the first two majors of the year. With a combination of skill, determination, and newfound fatherly inspiration, Scheffler was poised to make his mark on the green once again.
